Common Types of Fungal Infections Affecting Hair
Several specific fungal infections can affect the scalp and hair:
- Tinea Capitis: This is arguably the most common fungal infection of the scalp, primarily affecting children but also seen in adults. It's caused by dermatophytes, a group of fungi that feed on keratin, the protein that makes up hair, skin, and nails. Tinea capitis can manifest in several ways:
- Gray Patch Tinea Capitis: Characterized by scaly patches of hair loss with broken hairs close to the scalp, giving a
